Due to the timescales associated with the security vetting process, the successful candidate is likely to be assigned a start date in 2024. The successful applicant to this role will support Systems Chemistry area within Materials Analytical Science, to provide expertise across a varied portfolio of materials and engineering projects. These projects will typically involve working alongside experience members of staff within cross-disciplinary teams throughout AWE's Science and Engineering communities. This may include supporting implementation of new materials testing methodologies for mathematical model validation, to conducting characterisation and assessments of materials within a system. Although flexible working is available, and there are opportunities to work from home, due to the nature of this role it is anticipated that the successful candidate will spend the majority of their time working on site. Team members will generally need to be available, if required, to work at AWE Aldermaston during their working hours (whether part time or full time). It is Essential you can demonstrate the following: Degree or equivalent level knowledge/experience of a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Chemistry or Materials Science or Materials Engineering) Experience of working within a team to address scientific challenges. Knowledge of a range of experimental techniques which may include one or more of the following: molecular spectroscopy, thermal analysis, gravimetric methods and mechanical testing techniques. Experience of working in a laboratory environment whilst complying to relevant risk assessment and safety legislation. Good communication skills, both written and oral, and able to communicate information in a clear and concise manner. Competent in using Microsoft office software and suitable IT skills. We would be especially interested in candidates who can demonstrate the following: An understanding of ageing and lifetime prediction of materials such as polymers, ceramics and/or metals. Experience of applying scientific understanding to solve technical challenges. Experience using statistical method to analyse experimental data. Experience of working in compliance with company processes, standards, and quality procedures. Experience of managing a varied workload and delivering to defined time scales. Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role and be willing and able to work in designated areas
