    About our Team

    The Research Engagement Directorate provides high quality support for the Heriot-Watt research community across four divisions: Research Development, Legal, Research Futures Academy and Policy, Strategy and Impact. Working closely with the Business and Enterprise Directorate, RED works to deliver the Excelling in Research and Enterprise theme of Strategy 2025.

    Detailed Description

    The role will be manage and coordinate the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Impact Acceleration Fund (IAA). The IAA is a strategic award provided to Heriot-Watt to support knowledge exchange and impact from our EPSRC funded research. This funding supports researcher-led impact and KE projects, researcher skills' development through training and events, and the development of collaborations with external partners at regional, national and international levels. Key responsibilities include:

    Manage the day-to-day running of the IAA and be responsible for monitoring financial commitments and managing the IAA budget.

    Be responsible for preparing quantitative and qualitative data, ensuing accurate financial and project reporting at all stages of the project to EPSRC & relevant internal groups.

    Coordinate a range of impact and knowledge exchange activities across the University.

    Coordinate and deliver an impact-training programme in partnership with the Research Futures Academy.

    Oversee the development of promotional materials to demonstrate the success of the IAA, including case studies, videos and written material.

    Support in the delivery of other Impact related projects and activities.

    This is a fixed-term post to work within the Policy, Strategy and Impact team in the Research Engagement Directorate. We are looking for a highly organised individual with good communication, project planning and analysis skills, and some experience of research impact, preferably in universities or relevant industry.

    The Policy, Strategy and Impact team works across the University on a diverse range of issues : including public engagement, research integrity, responsible innovation, impact, ethics, research culture and productivity, equality, diversity and inclusion and global environmental sustainability. The team works closely with the Deputy Principal (Research and Impact) to realise the ambitions of Strategy 2025 across our global research community.

    Key Duties and Responsibilities

    The post-holder will be responsible for:

    1. Project Management

    Providing project coordination and support to the IAA Executive to ensure delivery of all IAA related activities;
    Monitor and managing the project budget, producing regular reports
    Overseeing and implementing an open-call for projects, managing the assessment and award process;
    Liaise with project leads on IAA-funded projects to ensure projects remain on track and within budget;
    Being the point of contact and provide specialist advice on the IAA, providing support to researchers submitting project proposals;
    With oversight from the Research Impact Development Manager, service the IAA Steering Group and Chair providing briefings and reports.
    Working closely with the team's interconnected public engagement and communication & marketing functions, to support and enable our researchers.
    Working with and support the Research Impact Development Manager in the overall delivery of the team's impact activities.
    Being an inspiring representative of the University and establish effective working relationships across the Research and Engagement Directorate, with key partners other teams and important stakeholders both internal and external to Heriot-Watt University;

    2. Events & Training

    Managing and oversee a programme of events and initiatives to stimulate culture change in the area of impact and responsible innovation.
    Assisting in the organisation and delivery of the annual Impact Festival, the Principal's Research Impact and Engagement (PRIME) Awards and Impact showcase events.
    Assisting in the organisation of joint industry workshops, to help mature existing and developing strategic partnerships.
    Participating in local, national, and international impact networks to share and develop best practice.

    Education, Qualifications and Experience

    Educated to degree standard or equivalent experience


    A postgraduate qualification in management or professional qualification in project management.



    Significant experience in a research-related or similar organisation;
    Project management skills including management and motivation of individuals, of project deliverables and of resources;
    Management of projects of scale and complexity;
    A knowledge and understanding of financial management procedures;
    Event management skills;
    Ability to balance competing priorities under pressure.


    Experience in a role related to research impact;
    An understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion requirements as they pertain to the research environment,

    Competencies, Skills and Knowl edge


    An ability to learn quickly and manage a diverse, rapidly changing portfolio;
    Excellent writing and communication skills;
    Excellent interpersonal skills
    Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills : identifying and building the trust of priority stakeholders (internal and external);
    Excellent interpersonal, liaison and networking and presentation skills (both orally and in writing); able to understand and communicate research-related information effectively;
    Ability to work undirected.
    High regard for confidentiality, security and accuracy.


    Knowledge of IT and /or financial systems
    Ability to read and analyse documents and extract salient information to give clear explanations and guidance notes
